40 Days of Discipline:  Day 15 – Devotional Readings

I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. (Psalm 119:99, New International Version)

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?  (Psalm 8:3 – 4, New International Version)

Theme:  The Wisdom of Discipline

Reflection:

Isaac Newton is one of the greatest scientists and mathematicians to ever live.  For over two decades he observed falling objects and the motion of objects such as the moon and was able to explain the law of gravity.  Many other significant discoveries throughout history have resulted from disciplined examinations of nature.  Consider for example the contributions of Leonardo da Vinci, and the Wright brothers (Orville and Wilbur) to human flight.  The disciplined examination of nature by these individuals is well documented.  For example, they spent many hours examining and documenting the flight of birds.  These individuals have had a profound impact on human progress because of their disciplined focus.

As I consider the Scripture passages above and similar passages in the book of Psalms (e.g., Psalms 19 and 104) I see a similar pattern of discipline leading to discovery.  David gains insight from meditating on God’s word, and discovers truths about God and mankind through disciplined examination of nature.

Conclusion:

Significant discoveries often result from focused examinations.  In our distraction filled world, focused examination of anything seems like a luxury.  We lose spiritual discoveries when we are not disciplined enough in our examination of God’s word and his creation.   How do you incorporate distraction free examination of God’s word and creation into your life?  I would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. Good Morning,

The theme: Wisdom of Discipline is an example of the benefit of focusing on God’s presence and Powerful Word during the midst of 🌎 earthy distractions. Be still. During this particular season, I have been blocking out distractions and listening to the still voice of God. We all have a gift and purpose. The key is to discover our purpose during our time on earth. Regardless of our circumstances, we can still move forward in our purpose.
    Romans 8:28

    Blessings 🙏

  2. I am easily distracted. My mind tends to wander in every direction. But I experience minimal distractions when I focus on God’s words before the day takes over. I also like to walk in the mornings and take time to listen and take in my surroundings. Some of my most memorable moments of sensing God’s presence have been on walks at sunrise or on the wooded trails in our neighborhood.

  3. I am the type who can get easily distracted but I also can be very focused when I really set my heart on something or on the work that needs to be done. Being responsible entails discipline. Fear and Doubt can be the caused of distractions too. I remember when we were posted in Muscat, Oman I used to be afraid of being alone driving to church on Sunday morning. It’s a Muslim country and Sunday mornings was usually quiet on the road and not many people drive to go to church. Friday is the time Muslims worship at the mosque. So sometimes I feel I am the only one on the road. What helped me to focus on my driving and not be scared was when I noticed the huge rocks around me but they were almost touching the blue sky above. Oman is beautiful , but even in the city, there are big rocks especially in the highway, and the soil is golden brown , it makes you feel like you’re in the dessert, but actually you’re in the city. Those rocks reminded me of God’s strength and power. I listen to worship songs in the car and when I am scared, I pray a simple prayer, like “ Oh Lord be with me and take care of me at this time..” Talking to God that way, helps me overcome fear.
I will share here a part of what I read from my daily devotional which I think is relatable to our topic:
God is the creator of the heavens and the earth. He is the most magnificent artist, and the sky is just one of His canvases where he displays His beauty. From sunup to sundown, we can see his creativity and greatness. The heavens, sky and stars reveal God’s glory. it is so easy to forget and doubt how great and beautiful our God is, and his creation, because we are to focused on what is directly in front of us. God gives us hope through creation, but we have to pause, look, and capture the moment.
    Psalm 19:1
“ The heavens declare the glory ofGod; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

  4. I too am easily distracted, and so the morning affords me the best time to spend focused on the Lord and His Word, before the day’s agenda swarms in on me. Sometimes I engage my distractibility IN Gods Word, allowing myself to jump all around as my Bible reading (and commentary) leads me. Why not?! I am also using more my iPad instead of my iPhone (I use a digital Bible) to reduce distractions.
As for His creation, I am blessed in being able to walk from home into very beautiful green areas so I am trying to take evening walks more often, and just be in it, and at peace.
