40 Days of Discipline: Day 18 – Worship (basic Discipline)

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. – Romans 12:1

How long a list of attributes of God did you write/type yesterday? As we continue our focus on worship this week remember that we will rely on the information on the 40 Days of Discipline website for theory and spend most of our time engaged in practice.

Today I just want to highlight one extremely point made on the website: “Everyone worships something.”  Recognizing this tendency the Scripture warns about the futility of worshiping anyone or anything other than God.” This thought is very sobering and calls for honest introspection to avoid idolatry.

As I mentioned above, yesterday you were asked to write/type the attributes of God that you believe make him worthy of worship. Today please write or type attributes about yourself that should compel you to worship God.

Please use the comments option to share your thoughts.

  1. As I considered the attributes and character of God I was overwhelmed by how they are more meaningful to me because of my own character. Who I am, a sinner saved by His grace, highlights His character of mercy and love for me. It makes me think of Paul’s words in 1Tim 1:15. I am chief of sinner. Lord, continue to remove my sins of selfishness, unforgiveness, idolatry and impatience.

  2. Because I have been redeemed through the blood of the Lamb,
I am now blessed and not cursed,
I have the joy of the Lord,
    I am victorious!

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. (Ephesians 1:7-8 NIV)

I highly recommend Martha Munizzi’s worship song “Glorious”

  3. What immediately comes to mind is Psalm 139:14

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made, your works are wonderful; I know that full well. (NIV)

I truly believe this to be true for myself and every human being. There is a giant in each of us and we give glory to GOD when we maximise our potential.

Therefore I give glory to GOD by simply being the best ME I can be.

    1 Corinthians 15:10

But by the grace of GOD I am what I am, and HIS grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them–yet not I, but the grace of GOD that was with me. (NIV)

  4. When I am not tricked by pride to believe that I am the master of my fate and the captain of my soul I am aware of a deep longing. It is a longing for perfect love, true excellence and many other superlatives. In the depths of my soul I am really like the deer panting for water and longing to experience the perfection I long for. It is this sometimes dormant (unfortunately) attribute that makes me prime to worship the one true God – He is the perfection I long for.

  5. I can praise God because I am His image, I am His daughter, I am His creation. I am a child to the King of Kings. I am saved, redeemed, forgiven. So, in all of the above I really did not have anything to do, all that I can claim to be is only because of His grace for me.
