40 Days of Discipline:  Day 29 – Counsel

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. (Proverbs 15:22, New International Version)

Theme:  Rejoicing and Thanksgiving

Context:

This week we will focus on the disciplines of Counsel, Creation, and Sabbath.  We will start with Counsel.

Accepting that there are benefits to seeking good advice is noncontroversial.  Seeking advice is very much a part of our daily lives, especially in our interactions with experts and professionals (e.g., health care professionals, teachers, and tax advisors).  However, we are sometimes reluctant to seek advice because it makes us appear ill-informed or weak.  As a result, we sometimes miss opportunities to thank God for benefits he has decided to give us through our interactions with other members of our community.

Bible Passage:

Our Bible passage today reminds us why it is wise to seek good counsel.  Please study the passage and consider the question below.

Question:

Do you practice giving God thanks for the advisors he has placed at your disposal?

Please leave a comment.  We would love to hear from you.

  1. The people I take advice from are usually the ones I surround myself with who are mostly family and close friends. Occasionally there are professionals that I seek advice from too. Most of the times I give thanks for family and friends but many times it doesn’t cross my mind to give thanks for professionals. I may give thanks for the situation working out to my benefit but not always for the individual.

  2. I rarely hesitate to get advice from those God has placed in my life to support me (ex. Parents, husband, siblings). However, even though I thank God for them being alive, I don’t think I’ve ever made the distinction to thank God for providing them as “advisors.”

  3. I tend to thank God for the outcomes of situations, often neglecting to thank Him for placing wise, godly people on my path. This is a practice I need to incorporate in my prayer time. Slow down to acknowledge others whose counsel has helped me.

  4. When I pray, I always thank God for all the blessings including all loved ones, relatives, friends but more often than not, I tend to forget to mention in particular my pastor, advisors or missionaries I work with, or ask for prayers for me and my family. I always thought they are included already in my prayer, when I say to God, “ Thank you for all the blessings especially for people , friends, loved ones supporting or helping me in their own way.” I also believe that if one needs a counselor/ mentor , that person should be spiritually and mentally capable. I mean someone who knows the Lord but at the same time also clinically professional.

  5. I need to consistently give God thanks. .

  6. I don’t seek advice very often. I usually pray about my circumstances or ask for prayer. However, when I do seek advice, it is usually from the same people, who happen to be family members. I know their advice is Godly, and if they say they will pray for me, or for the situation I presented to them, I believe they will.

As much as I appreciate these individuals and value them, I don’t think I have ever thanked God for them as advisors. I should. I just did.
