40 Days of Discipline:  Day 32 – Creation

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. (Psalm 19:1, New International Version)

Theme:  The Local Church

Context and Bible Passage:

We continue our focus on the Discipline of Creation.  Today’s Scripture reading explicitly links nature to God as the creator.  We must never be casual about this linkage because the world is anxious to provide alternative propositions.

In the local church, Christian music has historically served a crucial role in the discipline of Creation.   Here are the partial lyrics of two songs you may be familiar with.  The first is traditional and the second is contemporary:

How Great Thou Art by Carl Boberg

Oh Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art

So Will I (100 Billion X) by Hillsong UNITED

God of creation
There at the start
Before the beginning of time

With no point of reference
You spoke to the dark
And fleshed out the wonder of light

And as You speak
A hundred billion galaxies are born
In the vapour of Your breath the planets form
If the stars were made to worship, so will I
I can see Your heart in everything You’ve made
Every burning star
A signal fire of grace
If creation sings Your praises, so will I

  1. I could spend forever being in awe when I think about creation. It’s almost impossible to comprehend the awesomeness of God when I think about humans (God’s ultimate living creation) and nature.

If we take a moment to think about the complexity of a living being, and think about some of the wonders of the world, it isn’t surprising there are songs of worship and praise about them.

I don’t think I have a favorite song that uses creation as its theme, but I immediately thought of the song, “So Will I “ before I realized it was listed, and I really like “How Great Thou Art”.

    I also really like “Indescribable”

From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea
    Creations revealing Your majesty
From the colors of fall to the fragrance of spring
Every creature unique in the song that it sings
    All exclaiming

    Indescribable, uncontainable
You placed the stars in the sky
And You know them by name
    You are amazing, God

    All powerful, untameable
Awestruck, we fall to our knees
    As we humbly proclaim
    You are amazing, God

Who has told every lightning bolt where it should go?
Or seen heavenly storehouses laden with snow
Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light?
Yet, conceals it to bring us the coolness of night
    None can fathom

    Indescribable, uncontainable
You placed the stars in the sky
And You know them by name
    You are amazing, God

    All powerful, untameable
Awestruck, we fall to our knees
    As we humbly proclaim
    You are amazing, God

    You are amazing, God

    Incomparable, unchangeable
You see the depths of my heart
And You love me the same
    You are amazing, God
    You are amazing, God

    • Thank you Joseth, and yes, “Indescribable” is one of my favorites too. 🙌🏾🙌🏾.

God is so awesome and when I take time to observe, meditate and appreciate His Creation, it is humbling and amazing the love He has for us.

A missionary couple, based in Peru, whose ministry is called Answers in Genesis, uses creation to introduce the Gospel and bring people to Christ. I met them through church. They shared with me a fantastic documentary called “God of Wonders”. This documentary thoroughly illustrates God’s creation and love, told by scientists who are believers. Here is the trailer and if you have not already, I hope you can see the full movie. https://youtu.be/fNzmo0Z5mSM

  2. Creation in corporate worship is the key to a spirit filled worship moment. When you think of how majestic God’s creation is, you cannot stop being grateful and the more you are prompt to keep praising and glorifying God. Believers who are faithful and with constant fellowship with the Lord, are humbled by God’s creation. Even just reflecting on how meticulously God created me and all that I am enjoying in this universe makes me wonder and awe on his power, majesty and greatness. No words can perfectly describe my gratefulness and love for the Lord for everything he has done and still doing for me up to this very present time of my life in this world He created. Indeed, to be a child of God redeemed and restored by His love is a privilege that is so special. The only way I could express my gratefulness to my creator is to glorify Him in my words, actions and deeds. The song below is one of my favorite songs about creation.

God of Wonders by Chris Tomlin

    Lord of all creation
    Of water, earth, and sky
    The heavens are Your tabernacle
Glory to the Lord on High
God of wonders, beyond out galaxy
    You are holy, holy
    The universe declares Your majesty
    You are holy, holy
    Lord of heaven and earth
    Lord of heaven and earth
    Early in the morning
    I will celebrate the light
And as I stumble through the darkness
I will call Your name by night
God of wonders, beyond out galaxy
    You are holy, holy
    The universe declares Your majesty
    You are holy, holy
    Lord of heaven and earth
    Lord of heaven and earth
Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth
Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth
Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth
God of wonders, beyond our galaxy
    You are holy, holy
Precious Lord, reveal Your heart to me
    Father holy, holy
    The universe declares Your majesty
You are holy, holy, holy, holy
Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth
Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth
Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth
Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth
Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth
Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven an

  3. The post today made me pause and give God thanks for His creation. I do enjoy it but often forget to thank the Creator. Here is one song that I enjoy. Look at the world.
