40 Days of Discipline: Day 22 – Review

The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. (James 5:16(b))

“Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” (Joel 2:12)

I am always amazed how much we can learn from each other under the Holy Spirit’s guidance.  Based on the excellent comments, this past week certainly didn’t disappoint.

Today is dedicated to reviewing what you have learned about Prayer and Fasting.  If you have missed any of the days, you can catch up.  Also, if you have missed any of the great comments you can go back and review them.  Most importantly, think about how you can apply what you have learned.

Today’s Question:

Are there any changes you would like to make based on our study this week?  Please consider sharing what you would like to change so we can pray with you.

  1. Prayer is an essential part of my life as a Christian. It comes naturally to me. I usually feel a sense of peace after talking with God. Fasting…….I’ve never fasted. In certain situations I’ve felt an overwhelming feeling to pray. I never gotten that feeling about fasting. I have considered it a few times, but the thought of feeling nauseous and getting a headache from not eating “concerns” me. I then resort to praying.

    Am I doing something sinful/wrong?

A few people mentioned giving up something to fast. I honestly have never felt like tv or anything else have taken God’s place in my life.

Based on the study this week, I would like to make some changes. I would like fasting to be a part of my Christian walk. I would like to experience the desire to fast in order to experience God at a different level.

Thank you for your prayers. 🙂

    • Hi Joseth,
I wouldn’t call what you are describing as sinful/wrong so much as I would suggest that you may be missing out on something. Jesus talked of “prayer with fasting” as a sort of more intense pursuit of deeper intimacy with the Father, and in my (limited) experience, it is true that denying myself does contribute to a heightened sensitivity towards Him when (& only when) it is coupled with an intense pursuit in prayer. As you have never tried it, I think you should, and experience for yourself what it means to you and your walk …and then let us know 🙂
      Yours in Him 🙏

  2. Thank you very much Lester. 🙂

  3. Over the past few weeks I have felt the need to take some time to be still before the Lord. Not a vacation but time to be quiet, agenda free, just waiting on Him. Please pray that the timing will work to do that before summer, even if it’s just a day or two.
