As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you. (Luke 19:41-44)
We are in our final week, often called Passion Week. Passion is used in this context to refer to suffering. At the start of our journey we recognized that a review of the Disciplines should not be a sterile academic exercise. Instead this journey must be a journey of practical application. This week we want to observe Jesus as our perfect demonstration of how a loving God shows up on the streets where we live with our joys and our pains, our highs and our lows. It is in these real life settings, including settings of sufferings that the Disciplines can serve as tools to help us see a God who cares deeply about us. As you observe Jesus in action this week please pay attention to how love is manifested and how the Disciplines serve as tools to help us address the real issues of life that we face – loss of a loved one, broken relationships, illness, loss of a job, etc.
