40 Days of Discipline: Day 19 – Worship (basic Discipline)

Do not forget the covenant I have made with you, and do not worship other gods. Rather, worship the LORD your God; it is he who will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies. – 2 Kings 17:38-39

How long a list of attributes about yourself did you write/type yesterday? I hope you are keeping the notes you are making. Before we get to today’s worship activity, here is an important piece of information on worship I want to highlight: Worship is an act of love and the words of Jesus are extremely powerful: “Love the Lord your God with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). How do you love with all your strength?
Having captured your list of God’s attribute that makes Him worthy of worship and your attributes that should compel you to worship God, I am sure you would agree that the reasons for worshipping God are overwhelming. You will also agree that we don’t always live lives of worship. Today, please think deeply about the distractions and obstacles that hinder your consistent dedication to worship and write/type them down.

Keep sharing your thoughts on worship and the titles of any of your special worship songs in the comments section.

  1. When I think of strength I think of great effort. Bodybuilders are a good example of exercising great strength to a desired end. So, I think when we exert ourselves, make every effort (push hard) to build up the Body of Christ (encourage and support other believers) with the ability (resources) God has given to us it’s an act of worship. As we move from prayer to action bringing glory to God and displaying Him to non-believers.
Obstacles/distractions to worship in my experience has been things like disappointment, loss, crises, sin – for others it may be illness and other trials – but if I can just recall Job’s reaction or remember that I have not yet strived as Jesus did to the shedding of blood in my struggles then there’s hope of overcoming….always. What helps is knowing that God is always present, the “eternal present” that Carolina spoke of in an earlier comment when we looked at ‘The Lord is my Shepherd’ . Ps 139’s ‘ whither shall I flee from Thy presence…Thou hast beset me behind and before….and Ps46:1’s a refuge, a present help …very encouraging to keep on worshiping.
The challenge of course is to move from an academic acceptance to a lifestyle outworking. But even in that God is working in us to achieve a desired end. We are His workmanship…more reason to worship!

  2. Right now – Nothing
