40 Days of Discipline: Day 17 – Worship (basic Discipline)

The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men.  – Isaiah 29:13

Welcome to the week of focus on the discipline of Worship.  When we started our 40 Days of Discipline journey over two weeks ago, one of the things that was pointed out was that we want to rescue insights from the jaws of familiarity.  Worship is certainly an area where there is possibly a lot of familiarity.  Over the next 6 days we will consider some thoughts but for the most part you will be actively participating.  I trust you will be able to fully participate.

There is so much rich information on Worship on the 40 Days of Discipline website that I encourage you again to read it carefully.  Today let me highlight just two points:

  •  Worship is a lifestyle (it is not something we do on Sunday mornings or as directed by a worship leader).
  • God actively seeks believers to worship him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23).  Don’t you want to be a part of this group that God is seeking?

As I mentioned above, this week will be about participation.  To participate you will need to write or type.  You will also want to keep what you write or type because each day will build on each other.  Here is today’s activity:

Please write down all the attributes of God that you believe make him worthy of worship.  Please avoid just repeating what you have heard from others or just using popular phrases used in church settings.  Prayerfully think about attributes that you are genuinely in awe of and write/type them.

P.S.  Since songs are so much a part of worship, do you have a favorite worship song that you would like to share?  Mention the title in the comments section and also share your thoughts on today’s activity.

Here is a song to sing/hum/whistle:  “I’m coming back to the heart of worship.”

  1. God is worthy of praise because He is:
    – the source of everything
    – good, righteous, just
    – He is the truth
    – merciful, forgiver, redeemer, my Savior
    – abundant in love, or better said ,He is love. 1 John 4:8

  2. Just thought I’d share one of my favorite songs, which I feel beautifully puts into words the awesomeness of God’s grace and mercy:

    He is jealous for me,
Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree,
    Bending beneath the weight and wind of His mercy;
    When all of a sudden,
I am aware of my afflictions eclipsed by glory,
    And I realize just how beautiful You are and how great Your affection is for me;
    Oh, how He love us.

My favorite line in the song says “If Grace is an ocean, then we’re all sinking.” One of things I worship God for is His ability to completely overwhelm and cover (“sink”) me with His presence and Grace! Like a “tree” bowled over, I remember just how much He loves us.

(song: How He Loves Us ~The David Crowder Band)

    • Thanks for that Song Natalie —- here’s another that I really love it’s called Jesus, you’re beautiful:
Jesus, bright as the morning star
Jesus how can I tell you how beautiful you are to me
Jesus, song that the Angels sing
Jesus dearer to my heart than anything

Sweeter than springtime purer than sunshine
      Ever my song will be
      Jesus you’re beautiful to me.

  3. Here are some of the attributes I wrote down that make God worthy of my worship:
    • He is the definition of Love (everything He does is love)
    • He is sovereign (possessing supreme or ultimate power)
    • He is immortal/eternal
    • He demonstrates the perfect balance of justice and mercy
    • His plans are perfect and they will come to fruition because His resources are limitless

  4. Here are the attributes of God that prompts me to worship Him:
*He is my Rock , my refuge
    *He is Just
    *He is Love
    *He is Faithful
    *He is Compassionate
    *He is Mighty
    *He is Divine
I like the following songs: Good to be alive’ byJason Gray , Who am I by Casting Crowns, Jesus bring the rain by Mercy Me, The Only Name (His name) by Big Daddy Weave, and Legacy by Nicole Nordman. …check them out they are really good! 🙂

  5. One song that immediately comes to mind is Heather Headley’s ‘Here I am to Worship’ off her CD Audience of One

I worship the One and True Living GOD because he is GOD. HIS mercy. HIS forgiveness. HIS GRACE. I suffered for most of my life with guilt and self contempt. I am forever indebted to HIM for releasing me from this prison. A debt I know I can never repay. SO I LIVE!

I, even I, am HE who blots out your transgressions for MY own sake; and I will not remember your sins. Isaiah 43:25 (WOW!)

  6. It’s easy for me to worship God because He is the embodiment of
    holiness
    love
    wisdom
    mercy.
He is my Creator, Saviour, Provider, Healer.
Helen Baylor’s “Lord, You’re Holy” is one of my favourite worship songs:

There’s not enough words that I can say
To tell you how much I appreciate
All the wonderful things You’ve given me
    Your loving kindness
    Your tender mercies
It’s my desire to praise You
And tell you how much I love You
You’re worthy of all the honor
Lord You’re worthy of all the praise!

  7. Your grace abounds in deepest waters
Your sovereign hand will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You’ve never failed, and You won’t start now
